Who We Are

The Southwest Florida Home Coalition is working to ensure that 80% of people in Southwest Florida have access to housing and transportation that costs less than 45% of their income by 2040.

The Home Coalition is a collective impact initiative working to increase housing options for families and the workforce in our region. The coalition focuses on making systems change to increase housing choices and remove barriers.

Rent and mortgage payments are typically the biggest expense in a monthly budget. Housing and transportation costs have become so expensive in Southwest Florida, it leaves many people cost burdened, which means they are paying a disproportionate share of their budget towards these expenses. This can force people to make tradeoffs like putting off preventative healthcare, purchasing cheaper, less nutritious food, or forgoing continuing education because they need to work more hours to pay the higher expense. Also, there are stark gaps between populations throughout our region, sometimes a result of systemic barriers. To achieve our goal, we must align systems to be fair and work for everyone by closing achievement gaps between races, ethnicities, income levels, neighborhoods, and citizenship status.

Home to families, retirees, businesses, educational institutions, agriculture, industry, tourism and manufacturing, Southwest Florida includes five counties, Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee Counties.

There is a gap in the number of homes needed for all its residents, of every economic level. The supply of housing units is simply not keeping up with demand.

The Southwest Florida Home Coalition has partners in more than 80 organizations and companies in real estate, government, development, and non-profits in the five-county region. Working regionally helps us to understand the scope of the housing needs and gives us a chance to enact pilot projects in one area that can be scaled and replicated to others.

The Southwest Florida Home Coalition kicked off on May 1, 2023. The coalition came from a call for solutions to the region’s biggest social problems: housing, healthcare, workforce and education. Building on the success of FutureMakers Coalition, which was formed in 2015, the Home and Health and Wellness Coalitions were formed.

The Home Coalition knows that no single individual or organization can dissolve the complex problems that exist in the housing market.  By leveraging relationships and resources the coalition has increased capacity towards our shared goal to decrease the cost of housing and transportation in our region.
